Richard Lochhead MSP and Cllr Jérémie Fernandes have written a joint letter to Amazon UK asking them to review the decision to close the AmazonSmile programme

Amazon announced the closure of their AmazonSmile customer donation programme on 20th February.

The programme allowed customers to give a small percentage of the value of their purchase to a charity of their choice at no cost to them. Mr Lochhead and Cllr Fernandes understand that more than 100 charities in Moray were registered with, and benefited from, AmazonSmile.

Commenting Richard Lochhead MSP said:

“AmazonSmile allowed people shopping with Amazon to support good causes in Moray and over the years many local charities will have benefited from the scheme.

“I was sorry to hear that Amazon UK has taken the decision to close AmazonSmile, especially at a time where charities might be finding it harder to attract financial donations.

“We’ve contacted the head of Amazon in the UK to question the timing of this decision and to urge the company to reconsider, given that many charities and organisations in Moray and across the country have benefited from it in the past.”

Commenting Jérémie Fernandes added:

“It is really disappointing that Amazon has decided to stop the AmazonSmile programme.

“Many local charities, like Outfit Moray or Moray Women’s Aid, benefited from donations at no cost to the customer.

“With direct donations slowing down due to the cost-of-living crisis , many charities will be under increasing financial pressures. It is a particularly bad time for Amazon to stop the programme.

“I am very grateful to Richard Lochhead MSP for supporting this, and I hope Amazon will review their decision.”
