Richard Lochhead MSP has further drawn attention to the benefits of 'Flood Re' - a new industry backed flood insurance scheme, which launched in April of this year.
The local Moray MSP said:
"The 'Flood Re' Scheme enables people living in households at risk of flooding to purchase affordable cover. It recently marked its six month anniversary and in its first six months in operation the Scheme has taken on over 53,000 policies.
"Flood Re works by collecting a tax on the insurance industry. Funds raised from the tax are then used to share the risk between people at no risk of flooding, and those who are at risk. The best thing is Flood Re works behind the scenes - people will continue to purchase policies from a range of insurance providers just like they do now, and claims will also be paid out from your insurer in the usual way.
"Flood Re doesn’t cover everyone. Houses built after 2009 are not covered to prevent reckless housebuilding on flood plains, and businesses are not covered, too.
"It is essential that people shop around to find the best deal. There are a range of providers listed on www.floodre.co.uk which are accepting Flood Re backed policies so have a look at what you can get.
"Flood Re’s introduction is great news for people in Moray. If you would like any further information about the Scheme, please get in touch with the Parliamentary Office."
