MSP WELCOMES MORTUARY STANDARDS CONSULTATION

Richard Lochhead MSP has welcomed the launch of the consultation on the new draft Standards for Mortuary Services and is encouraging those with an interest to respond.
The review of mortuary standards across the country was agreed following a campaign led by Maryan Whyte and her family from Forres. The family called for the standards of mortuaries across Scotland to be checked following their own distressing experience at Moray’s mortuary.
Mr Lochhead has praised the efforts of Maryan and her family for their determination to campaign for improved mortuary standards, which has delivered real change across the country.
Commenting Mr Lochhead said:
“In 2016 following the tragic loss of her husband Frank, Mrs Whyte with the support of her family, spoke out about their distressing experience at Moray’s mortuary and their campaign for better standards for Scotland’s mortuaries began.
“Their efforts made this a national issue and they have secured significant improvements that should mean all mortuaries in Scotland should meet the needs of bereaving families, the deceased, and the staff who work there.
“The consultation on the draft standards that have been published is an important step towards these standards being implemented, which should ensure that no more families have to go through the same experiences as the Whyte family.
“The family have achieved a great deal especially given they were campaigning at a time when they were grieving for a loved on.
“I welcome the publication of this consultation on mortuary standards and would encourage everyone with an interest to read the draft standards and share their views before it closes at the end of July.”
