MSP COMMENTS ON SPEYSIDE COOPERAGE WORLD RECORD SUCCESS

Richard Lochhead MSP has congratulated David McKenzie and the team at Speyside Cooperage on setting a new world record for raising a 190 litre barrel on Saturday.  Mr Lochhead was master of ceremonies on the day and was delighted to be part of an event celebrating the skills and hard work that underpins a key part of the whisky industry.

Speaking after the event Moray’s MSP said:

"Witnessing the four coopers attempting to set a new world record for raising a 190 litre barrel was a sight to behold and the fact that David McKenzie managed it in three minutes and three seconds was truly astonishing.

"The event was a powerful reminder of the skills and hard work that underpins an aspect of the whisky industry that is often underrated. After all, the interaction of the barrel with spirit determines the depth, flavour, and ultimately the taste of Scotch Whisky.

"As it celebrates its 70th anniversary, the Speyside Cooperage and Visitor Centre Manager Gill Reid deserve huge credit for coming up with the idea of setting a new world record and helping putting Speyside on the map."
