MORAY SCHOOLS TO PREPARE FOR FULL TIME EDUCATION

23/06/2020

Richard Lochhead MSP has welcomed the update from the Scottish Government on plans for reopening schools, confirming that local authorities should now prepare for full time education from August.

The Deputy First Minister updated the Scottish Parliament this afternoon, telling MSPs that due to the progress that has been made in suppressing the virus, and if that progress continues, then local authorities should prepare for children to return to schools full time after the summer holidays.

Commenting, Mr Lochhead said:

“I know that this has been an anxious time for families in Moray as the Council prepares for schools to reopen safely in August, and I’m sure that this update will be welcomed by families across Moray.

“We are only now in a position to plan for full time education from August, due to the progress that has been made in recent weeks in suppressing the virus. It is essential that everyone continues to follow the public health guidance to ensure that progress continues, in order for schools to restart on a full time basis after the summer holidays.

“The return to school must be done safely and although the situation is looking a lot more optimistic, Councils will need to ensure that contingency plans are in place for a blended approach should it be needed.

“I’m aware that Council officers, head teachers and wider school staff will all be working hard behind the scenes on the local plan for returning to school safely. I want to thank all of them for everything they’re doing to support pupils and families through these very difficult circumstances.

“I also want to thank children and parents across Moray – I know how hard and unsettling the last few months have been for everyone but by sticking to the guidelines you’ve all played an important role in controlling the virus and helping to save lives.”
