MORAY MSP RESPONDS TO TORY RUN MORAY COUNCIL PLANS FOR LIBRARY CLOSURES
14/11/2024Responding to the Conservative-run Moray Council’s proposals to close 7 of the 11 local libraries in the area, Richard Lochhead MSP for Moray said:
“I was shocked to see proposals published by Moray Council to close 7 of its 11 local libraries and know that this scale of closure would be a devastating blow for our communities.
“This is not the first time a Tory administration has brought forward plans to close local libraries and communities will undoubtedly be up in arms that we’re here again.
“Tory councillors will be well aware they have a statutory duty to provide an adequate library service and, although I recognise public finances are under real strain, I don’t think anyone would accept that having only four libraries across the whole of Moray could be considered adequate provision.
“Our libraries are more than a place to borrow books, they are vital community hubs and provide access to important services for some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.
“I’ve written in the strongest terms to the Interim Chief Executive John Mundell outlining my serious concerns about these plans.
“I would encourage residents and library users in the communities affected to share their views with the Moray Council and the Tory administration ahead of any final decisions being taken.”
