MORAY MSP RAISES CONCNCERS OVER THREAT TO PLOUGHING MATCHES FROM HMRC WITH CHANCELLOR

28/01/2022

Richard Lochhead MSP has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer asking him to row back on a threat from HMRC which puts at risk the continued existence of ploughing matches and charity tractor runs.

HMRC have said that from April 2022, tractors used at such events must run on white diesel instead of agricultural red diesel as they do not regard ploughing matches or charity events as “agricultural use”.

Commenting, Moray’s SNP MSP Richard Lochhead said:

“This isn’t the first time the UK Government has tried to limit the use of red diesel in tractors – back in 2008 they tried to ban its use in tractors that were being used to set up agricultural shows, but backed down after public pressure.

“Now, UK Government plans wouldn’t allow the use of red diesel in ploughing matches or charity road runs. I’m particularly concerned about the implications for ploughing matches, which are often held here in Moray. Many local farmers and agricultural workers take part in these events which are an important part of our local heritage.

“I don’t believe there can be any serious argument on the part of HMRC that ploughing matches are not agricultural work given the skills that they help develop.  I have written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer asking him to intervene and ensure that a sensible approach is taken by HMRC so that these popular events can continue.

“I can’t see how these changes would have any useful environmental or fiscal impact for the Treasury and just seems to show a lack of understanding or care for rural communities.”
