MORAY MSP JOINS COMMUNITY IN COMMERATING HISTORIC NORWEGIAN LINKS
27/08/2015Moray's MSP Richard Lochhead joined the Burghead community to celebrate the historic links between the village and the people of Norway, and to remember those who lost their lives in the Shetland Bus Operation during the Second World War.
Richard had the role of Master of Ceremonies at the dedication of a memorial to the Shetland Bus Operation on Sunday 23 August, which has been created by Trustee of the Burghead Heritage Trust, Dan Ralph.
Speaking about the event, Richard Lochhead MSP said:
“I was very honoured to be part of this very special ceremony, commemorating those who took part in the Shetland Bus Operation during World War Two, and to join people from Norway and Burghead to remember those who tragically lost their lives in these highly dangerous operations.
“With sandstone from Burghead, millstone from a Shetland quarry and a propeller from Shetland also, this memorial will be a beautiful tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and after all the work that has gone into its creation by Dan Ralph, I was delighted to be there and see it unveiled.
“Burghead and Norway have historic connections, going back to AD900 when the Vikings fought the Picts, and the events in the village were a fantastic way to celebrate those links.”
