LOCHHEAD WELCOMES NEW GUIDANCE FOR PRIVATE LANDLORDS

Richard Lochhead MSP has welcomed new guidance setting out private rented sector landlords’ responsibilities for ensuring their property meets updated standards. 

New statutory guidance published by the Scottish Government states from March 2024, all private rented homes will need to have central heating, a kitchen with adequate facilities, and safe, properly maintained common areas. The new guidelines also sets out requirements to improve safety and reduce the risk of fire and electrocution. Similar standards are already in place in the social rented sector.

The guidance also covers the action landlords must already take to prevent damp and mould.

Commenting Richard Lochhead MSP said:

“The new repairing standard for private sector rented properties comes into force next March and will help ensure that tenants in the private sector are living in a safe environment and has the facilities we all need in a home.

“I know that the majority of private landlords in Moray will already be meeting these standards, however, I am also aware from my own casework that some tenants are sadly having to put up with poor living conditions and that isn’t acceptable.

“By publishing the new guidance one year in advance, this will hopefully give landlords the time to better understand their responsibilities and to carry out any works that are required to bring their own properties up to standard.”
