LOCHHEAD RAISES CONCERNS WITH BRITISH GAS FOLLOWING MINIMUM TOP-UP INCREASE
14/02/2020Richard Lochhead MSP has written to the Chief Executive of British Gas to raise concerns about them increasing the minimum top-up amount for prepaid gas meters. The change was implemented last month and raised the minimum amount from £1 to £5, which has proved problematic for some households. It is less flexible and therefore harder for financially vulnerable customers.
Commenting Moray’s MSP said:
“I’ve been concerned to hear that British Gas has increased its minimum top-up amount and that some people have been forced to choose between topping up their gas meter or putting food on the table as a direct result. This is clearly an unacceptable scenario.
“The increase, which affects prepay meter users, is particularly problematic because this form of payment is often used by people who are the least financially secure.
“I have urged British Gas to make access to energy as accessible as possible by reverting to a lower minimum top-up."
