TRANSPORT SCOTLAND RESPONDS TO MSP’S CALL TO PUT ELGIN BACK ON THE MAP

17/06/2019

Transport Scotland has confirmed to Richard Lochhead MSP that it plans to install a direction sign to Elgin on the A9 near Aviemore.

Moray’s MSP wrote to the roads authority to express his concerns that Elgin had been removed from the road signage north of Aviemore.  Mr Lochhead urged Transport Scotland to review the decision and sought the Chief Executive’s intervention to have Elgin put back on the map as soon as possible.

Transport Scotland has now replied to the MSP acknowledging the concerns the change in signage may have caused residents and businesses in Moray and following Mr Lochhead’s letter it is proposed to install an additional sign indicating the direction of Elgin.

Commenting Richard Lochhead MSP said:

“When travelling on the A9 recently I was surprised to see that Elgin had been removed from the road sign north of Aviemore – particularly given that Elgin is the second largest community in the Highlands region.

“This issue was also raised with me by individuals involved in Moray’s tourism sector with some local businesses concerned the change could affect visitor numbers to the area.

“Big efforts are being made to embrace Moray’s potential as a world class visitor destination and it is essential that Elgin is put back on the map.

“I’m pleased that Transport Scotland has listened to the local concerns and plans to reinstate road signage to Elgin on the A9 – I hope this new sign will be installed quickly.”
