TORY TAX HIKE WILL HIT MORAY’S LOWEST PAID WORKERS THE HARDEST

08/09/2021

MANY HOUSEHOLDS FACE DOUBLE WHAMMY OF TAX RISE AND UNIVERSAL CREDIT CUTS

Richard Lochhead MSP has hit out at Tory plans to raise National Insurance – a move that see Moray’s low paid workers penalised and subsidising the wealthy.

Boris Johnson confirmed yesterday in the House of Commons that the Tory government is set to break its manifesto pledge and increase National Insurance by 1.25%. Mr Lochhead has described the move as deeply regressive and would leave families in Moray, young people, and the low paid hundreds of pounds worse off each year.

Commenting, the SNP MSP for Moray said:

“Boris Johnson’s Tory tax hike is a deeply regressive move that will penalise families in Moray and leave those who can least afford it to subside the wealthiest in society.

“Families, low paid workers, and young people in Moray are set to be left hundreds of pounds a year worse off at a time when many households are struggling with the rising cost of living. Worse still, this tax hike comes at the same time the Tories are slashing people’s income by over a thousand pounds in cuts to Universal Credit.

“I don’t doubt the need for Westminster to fix the crisis it has created in England, but it should be done in a way that is fair and not through a regressive tax that hits families in Scotland, young people and the least well off the hardest.

“This is just a new poll tax on Scottish families and the Tories should ditch these plans immediately – this is no way to deliver a fair and just recovery from the pandemic.”
