RICHARD LOCHHEAD MSP REINFORCES ABI’s ADVICE FOR HOLIDAYMAKERS

27/07/2023

Moray MSP Richard Lochhead is urging constituents who have had or may have their holiday plans affected by wildfires and the continued heatwave across the south of Europe to follow advice issued by the Association of British Insurers on how travel insurance can support them.

The information can be found here at the link below and includes advice on common questions holidaymakers might have.

Commenting Richard Lochhead MSP said:

“The extreme weather conditions in the south of Europe are incredibly concerning on a number of levels, not least in terms of climate change and the impact these fires and the heatwave are having on people who live in these countries.

“Holidaymakers will be weighing up whether to go ahead with their plans to travel and for those already there the insurance industry has issued some helpful guidance for what to do if your trip has been disrupted because of the wildfires.

“If people are travelling to regions experiencing extreme heat or wildfires, I urge them to follow local health advice and to keep themselves safe.”

ABI advice to any constituents that are affected by the wildfires is to:

  1. Contact their tour operator or airline for advice and information.
  2. Always follow local health advice, such as dealing with heatwaves. Your travel insurance will apply in the usual way if you need emergency medical treatment due to extreme weather.
  3. If planning on travelling, always keep up to date with and follow the latest foreign travel advice on GOV.UK from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), especially as travelling against it is likely to invalidate your travel insurance.
  4. Check the scope of cover under their travel insurance policy. In some circumstances they may be covered for disruption caused by wildfires or extreme weather, or if they are injured or fall ill due to a wildfire, or heatwave.
