MORAY MSP WELCOMES POLICE SCOTLAND’S MOTORCYCLE SAFETY CAMPAIGN
19/04/2023Richard Lochhead MSP for Moray has welcomed the start of Police Scotland’s annual motorcycle safety campaign.
The campaign runs from April to September and aims to promote motorcycle safety and to raise awareness amongst other drivers. According to Police Scotland, motorcyclists make up just one percent of road users in Scotland but account for 17 percent of all road deaths.
In 2021 over 450 motorcyclists were involved in serious collisions and in 2022/23 27 motorcyclists died on Scotland’s roads.
Commenting Mr Lochhead said:
“As the better weather arrives many motorcyclists will be looking forward to getting out on their bikes – indeed I’ve noticed quite a number of bikers out and about in Moray over recent weeks.
“It’s essential that motorcyclists know how to take care on the roads but it’s also vital that other road users are taking extra care and being alert to motorcyclists on our local roads.
“Given the number of motorcyclists involved in accidents and dying on our roads, Police Scotland’s annual safety campaign is incredibly important and I welcome the work officers will be doing over the coming months to tackle unsafe driving and to make our roads safer for all.”
