ANSWERS SOUGHT BY MSP OVER CHILDRENS DIABETES SERVICES

18/12/2015

Moray’s MSP has written to the Chief Executive of NHS Grampian, Malcolm Wright, seeking answers on the level of Diabetes Services available at Dr Gray’s, specifically for children living with the condition.

Mr Lochhead took action following correspondence from constituents who are concerned that there is only one Diabetes Specialist Paediatric Nurse caring for young patients in Moray.  He understands that the nurse is shared with Aberdeen and there are concerns that parents and some young patients are left feeling unsupported due to the lack of specialist nurses based at Dr Gray’s.

It has been conveyed to Mr Lochhead that diabetic children in Moray do not receive an equitable service to those who receive care and treatment in Aberdeen, and who have access to much greater levels of support.

Mr Lochhead has written to the Chief Executive of NHS Grampian, Malcolm Wright, seeking clarification over the level of services available at the Elgin hospital and asking if the Board has any plans to increase service provision for children with diabetes at Dr Gray’s going forward.

Richard Lochhead MSP said:

“Diabetes is a complex condition which can be difficult to manage and it is vital that children in Moray living with this condition receive the support and care they need.

“There are concerns amongst some parents that their kids are not receiving an equitable service to young patients who are cared for at ARI.  I’m keen to ensure that patients in Moray are not disadvantaged and that NHS Grampian are doing all they can to provide adequate levels of support to families in Moray who are dealing with diabetes.

“I’ve made the Chief Executive aware of the concerns of some local parents and have asked that he provide details of any plans NHS Grampian has to protect and increase specialist services for diabetic children at Dr Gray’s.”
